Capsize Of The MOD70 Trimaran - Race For Water
The Race For Water MOD70 multihull is a racing sailboat with impressive dimensions:
Length - 21.2 metre / 70 feet
Beam Width - 16.8 metre / 55 feet
Mast Height - 29 metre / 95 feet
Draught - 1.5 to 4.5 metre / 5 to 15 feet
Maximum speed - 43.2 knots
The trimaran was sailing around the world as part of the environmental expedition Race for Water Odyssey. A project to make a first global assessment of plastic pollution in the oceans, by visiting islands located in the centre of trash concentration zones.
On her way from the Koror Islands to Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, the high peformance trimaran capsized on Saturday 12th of September, 90 miles South East from the Chagos Archipelago. As they were navigating by night with 18 to 20 knots of wind, a strong gust of wind turned the boat over.
