A compass is a navigational instrument used for determining direction relative to the earth's magnetic poles. The compass is still the most valuable navigation instrument on any boat. A compass does not rely on electricity or power and always gives real-time navigation data. The chamber containing the needle or disk is filled with a liquid to damp the oscillations and to protect the needle or disk from shock. By combining the use of electronic and magnetic navigation, operators can create a robust navigation system. RIB and high speed craft compasses have internal gimbal systems for maximum stability during adverse pitch and roll conditions.
